| Masi Agricola nominated "European Winery of the Year" by Wine Enthusiast Magazine |
02.11.2007
The history of Masi is the history of its vineyards. Its name derives from "Vaio dei Masi" (little valley of the Masi in the valley of the Negrar, in the Valpolicella classico zone), the first vineyard acquired by the Boscaini family, owners of Masi, at the end of the 18th century.
Little by little, the winery has grown through successive and very careful acquisitions, which were selected for the quality of their terrain and location as well as for their historical importance, beginning from the classico zones of Valpolicella, Bardolino and Soave. In the last ten years the company developed projects in other prestigious viticoltural areas of the Venetian region and more recently outside Italy, in Argentina.
The Masi vineyards have remained in the Boscaini family for six generations. Sandro Boscaini is the company president; his brother Sergio is chief enologist; his cousin Roberto is logistic manager; his cousin Dario is responsible for viticulture.
Masi has been named "European Winery of the Year" by the authoritative Wine Enthusiast Magazine. The winery, to which the magazine has dedicated a large article in the issue of 15th
December by the Journalist Monica Larner, has been selected among a group of highranking nominees, such as the outstanding French Louis Roederer and Krug, the Italian Antinori and the Spanish Torres. Wine Enthusiast has recognized that "Masi is one of Italy’s most dynamic and innovative wineries, particularly for its skillful way of combining traditional and terroir-driven techniques with cuttingedge technologies. President Sandro Boscaini is focusing his attention on native varieties,“the patrimony of
the Veneto”, and on a return to “tipicità” ".
Sandro Boscaini, very satisfied with this prestigious prize, underlines that Wine Enthusiast, "in selecting Masi, wanted to honor the essence of “the Europe of wine”. The importance of the territory and of its values becomes clear when technology and usage of a few grape varieties inevitably lead to “globalization”. Through its philosophy, Masi declares fidelity and respect for its own territory, “le Venezie”, emphasizing the inbuilt values of native grapes and traditional local techniques but at the same time using avant-garde technologies. As a result, uniqueness and unrepeatability are the characteristics of our wines, in which we can trace the cultural roots of the Venetian values. They are wines matching the charm of history with pleasantness.
Masi, situated in Valpolicella, is one of the most dynamic and innovative Italian wineries, even though it boasts an undoubted traditional past: since the late eighteenth century, the Boscaini family has worked in the vineyards in the surrounding countryside over eight generations. In addition to the most famous wine, Amarone,Masi produces other important wines, such as Campofiorin
(often referred to as Supervenetian by definition) and Osar. Masi is an “unusual” winery in that it combines traditional local techniques typical of the territory with cutting-edge technologies preserving the typical quality of the local grape varieties, being defined by Sandro Boscaini as "the patrimony of the Veneto" and "a return to “tipicità”; as a matter of fact, the winery has planted an experimental vineyard with 48 rare or little known native varieties.
Masi produces exclusively premium wines which are modern in style but deeply rooted in tradition. The grapes used are mostly indigenous varieties of the region. They are vinified using traditional systems, like “appassimento”, combined with modern techniques.
The result is that each single wine has a unique personality, even maintaining the style of the region.
Modern, pleasant, well-balanced and recognizable wines which have earned Masi recognition for having “revolutionized the art of wine-making in the Veneto”, and which Hugh Johnson has defined as “a touchstone for Veronese enology”.
